Fundraiser to Keep Manhattan's Queer Bookstore Open
Date postedApril 8, 2026
Hello bookstore and publishing and writing friends,
If I've seen you in person recently, I have likely told you the big news: our friends and fellow queer booksellers at the Bureau of General Services--Queer Division, Donnie and Greg, are leaving New York City in May. Without someone to take over the business, their bookstore, which has been in Manhattan for 13 years, will close.
The Bureau is the last bookstore in Manhattan dedicated to queer and trans literature, events, and culture. Donnie and Greg have built a vibrant community around the bookstore as a space for queer art, performance, and culture. At a moment when queer literature is under extreme censorship and trans people are being targeted by legislation that threatens their human rights, we cannot lose this queer space.
Hive Mind Books has been working with Greg and Donnie to transition ownership of the Bureau to Hive Mind Books. But we need the money to do it.
Our GoFundMe launches today. Our goal is to raise $50,000 by June 1. If you have the means, we would love it if you could support our effort with a donation. And please help us spread the word! We just posted the news to Instagram and would appreciate if you could share the post and/or the GoFundMe link everywhere you can! (We're @hivemindbookstore and @bgsqd on instagram.)
We've had an amazing first year at Hive Mind Books and are already bursting at the seams with books and events. Being able to introduce our Bushwick and Manhattan communities to each other, and to share our event spaces, will be a huge lift for both bookstores. We would love your support to do this!
Thank you very much. See you soon, I hope.
Jules
