Organization Overview

The Center for Fiction is the only nonprofit literary organization in the U.S. solely dedicated to celebrating fiction, and it works every day to connect readers and writers. The Center is known for its special literary events, including its innovative panels, lectures, and conversations. The Center also features grants and workshops to support emerging writers, reading groups on classic and contemporary authors, and programs to help get kids reading. It recognizes the best in the world of fiction through its annual awards. An important piece of New York City history, the Center continues to build its renowned circulating library collection, begun in 1820 by New York City merchants before the advent of the public library system. The Center moved to downtown Brooklyn in 2019. At the Center for Fiction Bookstore, readers will be able to browse the latest in literature and crime fiction, with a large selection of deep cut backlist titles. The store will have a special focus on literature-in-translation and independent publishers.
