Position: Store Manager

Overview:  The Store Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day 

flow and functions of the bookstore, with a focus on supervising and delegating  to staff, and acts as host of the store – making sure that both customers and  employees are having a consistent and positive experience. The Bookstore Manager works with Store Ownership and the General Manager to meet sales and profitability goals through excellent merchandising, management and problem solving.   


The Store Manager conveys and embodies Greenlight’s ethos of providing a welcoming space for all members of our community and offering access to books and programming that are curated for our customers. This is accomplished through thoughtful and consistent training and direction of bookstore staff, and ongoing collaboration and communication with fellow members of the managerial team. This role directly supervises Shiftleaders and booksellers, answering questions and facilitating their ability to complete tasks in their various roles, and should be capable of performing those duties if
necessary. Store Manager maintains the physical plant, keeping the store clean and presentable. Store Manager directs, trains and sets the tone for store merchandising and displays. The Store Manager balances robust, role model presence on the sales floor providing customer service, staff supervision, troubleshooting and de-escalation with administrative time in the  office or away from the store for projects and meetings. 


The Store Manager collaborates with Greenlight’s management team to create and maintain consistent policies and procedures, and to coordinate hiring, training, scheduling, reviews, and communication with store staff. The Store Manager maintains their location's Basecamp team and facilitates/delegates projects assigned from other departments, including collaboration with the Ecommerce and Events/ Marketing Managers. Store Manager works with Buying and Receiving teams to direct the flow of books and merchandise into the store for shelving and display, and out of the store for sales and returns.  The Store Manager works with the HR Manager and General Manager to handle employee issues with consistency, diplomacy and documentation. They conduct and document regular check ins with staff new and existing staff to ensure training consistency and staff morale. The Store Manager meets regularly with their manager counterparts within the company, including Yours Truly Brooklyn and their sibling bookstore, attending cross departmental meetings as needed. 


The Store Manager will be involved in community relations and will act as a ‘face of the store’ in the neighborhood. This includes but is not limited to working and liaising with neighborhood organizations, schools, and surrounding businesses.   


Summary of Responsibilities include: 

•  Direct shift leaders and booksellers in merchandising and additional sales floor tasks  

•  Communicate store specific updates, information and instructions and assign staff projects via Basecamp and in person  

•  Coordinate web order & curbside pickup workflow in collaboration with Ecommerce Manager 

•  Manage in store receivers and work with Buying department to direct inventory flow   

•  Help facilitate coordination of events in store and occasionally offsite  

•  Address employee issues in a timely and effective manner, partnering with HR and other management as needed and documenting issues consistently and clearly  

•  Coordinate with counterparts at other locations and participate in manager meetings  

•  Liaise with management team to coordinate hiring, training, scheduling, reviews, and communication with store staff, including staff meetings  

•  Coordinate maintenance of physical plant   

•  Liaise with community organizations, including schools and business neighbors   

•  Manage location-specific supply checklists 


•  1+ years experience as a manager in a retail setting OR 2+ years as a manager in a non-retail setting 

•  Familiarity with book industry or comparable experience preferred 

•  Management experience including collaboration and conflict resolution 

•  Ability to create systems and processes and delegate execution 

•  Excellent time management, organizational and multi-tasking skills 

•  Ability to work in high volume environment 

•  Strong communication skills and quick problem-solving skills 

•  Ability to work well autonomously, as a supervisor, and as part of a team  • 

  Ability to lift 30 pounds or more 

•  Availability to work flexible hours--nights and weekends will be required  • 

  Proficiency with project management software and Microsoft Office suite.  


Direct Supervisors: General Manager, Company Owner   


Schedule: Five days / 40 hours per week on specified days, including store shifts and administrative time. Weekend availability required.    


Compensation: This is a salaried, non-union position with bonus potential.  Starting salary is $42,000, commensurate with experience.  Salaried employee benefits include employee discount, partially subsidized health insurance, 10 days paid vacation, and other intangibles including professional development  and cultural institution memberships. 


Review: All employees are given an annual performance review to assess their work in their position. Ongoing check-ins happen at the discretion of the direct supervisor.

Founded in October 2009, Greenlight Bookstore is a general independent bookstore in Brooklyn, New York, encompassing two bookstore locations, a stationery store, theater kiosks and pop-up locations at events throughout the city.
