The Book Industry Charitable Foundation (Binc) Scholarship Program seeks to truly make a positive impact in book store employees' lives and in our former Borders Group employees' lives by offering scholarships to employees and their dependents based on financial need, academic performance and community involvement. Scholarships are offered for full- or part-time study at an accredited institution of the student's choice.

The program is administered by Scholarship America, the nation's largest designer and manager of scholarship, tuition assistance and other education support programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals.

Who is eligible?

Applicants to the Scholarship Program must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be high school seniors or graduates or be current postsecondary undergraduates or graduate level students.
  • Plan to enroll in full- or part-time undergraduate or graduate study at an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school for at least half of the 2017-2018 academic year.

In addition to the requirements listed above, all applicants to the Binc Scholarship Program must be one of the following:

  1. Current employees or owners of retail bookstores in the U.S., or dependents* of such individuals who have a minimum of one year of continuous employment at the bookstore as of the application deadline date. Eligible employees must be employed directly by the bookstore.
  2. *Dependents include children aged 25 and under, spouses and qualified same-sex partners.

  3. Former full- or part-time Borders Group employees or dependents* of such employees who were employed with Borders Group at any point during the 2011 calendar year and who had a minimum of one year employment with the company.
  4. *Dependents include children aged 25 and under, spouses and qualified same-sex partners.

  • Applicants will be divided into four groups: current bookstore employees, dependents of current bookstore employees, former Borders Group employees, and dependents of former Borders Group employees. Awards will be granted to each group in proportion to the number of applications received.
  • Recipients are selected by Scholarship America. All information received is considered confidential. In no instance does any officer or employee of Binc play a part in the selection.
  • The selection process will not be influenced or affected by the actual or perceived race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, disability, gender, or sexual orientation of any applicant.

How and when will I be notified?

  • Applicants will be notified of their status via email in late April 2017.
  • The program is competitive; not all applicants will be selected as recipients.
